Say aloha to Ashley Hobbs, Playmate of the Month December 2010. A natural blonde with jade-green eyes, she’s ¼ Hawaiian, and she exudes a sexuality best suited to warm water and wet bathing suits, not out of place in a tropical paradise. She grew up in Kailua, a beach town on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. “My middle name is Ku’ulei,” she says. “I don’t really speak Hawaiian, but I know that it means ‘beloved’. And that’s the way I feel right now – my friends and family have been so supportive, and they told me that the December issue of Playboy is sold out in Kailua.” Ashley has been modeling since she was a kid – “I was an extra in a Barbie commercial,” she says, laughing – and when she turned eighteen, a friend of hers suggested that she submit her pictures to Playboy. “I wasn’t ready,” she says, “but a year or so later, another friend made the same suggestion, and I thought, ‘Why not?’” She went to a casting at the Mansion in Los Angeles, and four weeks later was flown back to test for Playmate. “It was intense,” she says, “especially the Centerfold shoot. I was late to the set, didn’t eat breakfast and had to hold the same pose for twenty minutes under hot lights. I actually fainted.” An intern fanned her with a magazine, and she recovered in time to shoot the Christmas centerfold. Before she was Miss December, Ashley was a supervisor for a nonprofit organization – “Providing support services to individuals with cerebral palsy,” she says proudly – and was working toward a degree in communications from a local college. “I moved to Los Angeles so I could keep all my Playboy commitments,” she says. “I had intended to move back to Hawaii and finish my degree, but my modeling career has really taken off.” For now, she’s living and working in Los Angeles, and after a residency at the Bunny House, she’s good friends with her fellow Playmates. “Playboy is like a family,” she says. “I feel so lucky to have been given this opportunity, and I just want to enjoy the ride.”

The youngest in a prominent family, her parents sent her to Miami when she was fifteen to learn English at an American school. “My father wanted me to study international business so that I could help him run his oil company,” she explains, “but I had other ideas.” Before long, Francesca was registered in a fashion merchandising program at a school in South Beach – and then she met Playboy photographer Jarmo Pohjaniemi on the beach. “He gave me his card,” she says. “I was interested, but I wasn’t ready – I was nineteen years old, and my parents would have killed me for even thinking about it.” Four years later, we met again – and this time she was more than ready. Not many of her friends and family members at home knew that Francesca was an American Playmate, but the secret was out after she was featured on the December cover of the Venezuelan edition of Playboy magazine. “It’s been crazy,” she says. “I miss my family in Venezuela, but I have a new family here with Playboy.” She’s been busy, too – between her American and South American features, she’s been inundated with offers for jobs in and out of the States. “I do have an apartment in Miami,” she says, “but these days, if I’m not at the Mansion, I’m living out of a suitcase in a hotel room.” In the absence of a home base, a broad fan base will have to do, and she tweets in English and Spanish to accommodate all of her fans. Hot commodity or not, one thing is for sure – Francesca will never leave you cold.

Surf’s up with Katie Vernola, our Playmate of the Month for June 2010. A student from Southern California, she has beach-blonde hair, green eyes and soft curves. Born in the Mojave Desert and raised in San Clemente, Orange County, she was a cheerleader for eleven years – evident in her ease and range of movement – and when she turned eighteen she started modeling for local photographers. “I was working with this one guy, and he asked if I was interested in Playboy,” she says. “I’ve always wanted to do Playboy, so of course I said yes.” Katie submitted her pictures, tested for Playmate, and made history as the youngest girl ever to appear in the Centerfold. Katie lives in San Clemente with her dog and birds, and she spends her days at the beach, going wakeboarding and riding on the dunes with her friends. She got up on a surfboard for the first time on location for her Playmate pictorial, and she made herself right at home. “I can’t wait to do it again,” she says. “I live in one of the best surf towns in the world, so I’m sure I can get an instructor.” When she’s not at the beach, Katie is in the garage – she’s a pretty good mechanic, and she can change your oil, rims and tires faster than you can say ‘cowabunga, dude’. She’s looking forward to a successful career with Playboy, but not necessarily in front of the camera. “I would love to work in production for the magazine,” she says. “That would be my dream job.”
